Baby Infiltration

Signs that our lives are about the change forever are starting to pop up all over our house. Here are a few sneak peak pics of the babies room and other pictures of baby things that seem to be infiltrating our house.

Baby backpack hiding next to the couches in the living room.

Bob Stroller trying to blend in in the living room.

Pack n' Play in our bedroom.

Sneak Peak: Futon Couch in Baby's room.

Curtain for the closet.

Rocking chair next to curtain.

Some of the crib

Sneaky swing, hiding by the chair and stereo in the family room.

Not baby, but I realized I haven't shared the guest room sink. Here she is. The string, of course, gets removed. I can't wait to share pictures of this beauty when she is in use and installed. The bottom shelf will get baskets which will hold baby bear's cloth diapers and other diapering supplies.

And Trooper - He doesn't know what to think about the whole baby thing. He just wants us to remember that our bed belongs to him - and he doesn't have to share if he doesn't want to. Hm Trooper, we will see about that. Just because you are 2 doesn't mean you won't have to share with your little brother. But don't worry, it goes two ways, he has to share with you too. Trust me, you will like him when he starts eating and discovers the "drop food on the floor for the doggy" game.

Ok ok, and a belly shot - I am the world's worst first time pregnant person because honestly, I have not only not shared pictures, but have not taken them either. PS. not the greatest picture. PPS, um- I am measuring big - as in, I have to get an ultrasound to see if it is me or if it is the kid. I would like to think it is because I am narrow and the baby had nowhere else to go, however, perhaps it is just that I have *gulp* gained a little more weight than I should have...nervous laugh nervous laugh.

Vegging Out

I realized I have not shared my garden in a while (that is what working+trips to Bend and Eugene+Busy 32 week pregnant girl will do). Anywhoo - the garden is thriving, much to my surprise given the weather (cool and rainy). Without futher Ado - here she is, my beautiful organic garden and some of her delicious spoils:

Beautiful, delicious Raspberries

Sweet Blueberries

Future Zucchini!

Purple Bush Beans

Tasty Orange Cherry Tomatos (not Orange yet, obviously)

Zucchini, bush beans, cucumber, squash

Tomatos, Onions, Carrots

Spoils! Yellow wax bush beans and purple bush beans

Peas!

All the above plus the 3rd tomato of the year. Yum!
----------------------
And because I feel like you may be wondering about the bathroom - here is where we stand:

Tub is sitting in its future place

Ah, progress. This tub is 6 feet long - normal tubs are only 5 feet. It is also wider and deeper than a normal tub and I am so excited to soak in this baby when the bathroom is all done!

On that note, we were planning on getting all the prep work for the tile done this coming weekend - then Nick found out he had to work. Poor guy. He works so hard for us - I feel bad that he has to work so much and then come home and do projects. It will be super nice when we just have all our projects completed and he can come home and relax!

Jack Sparrow (feat. Michael Bolton)

I just had to put this on here. I think it is hysterical for some reason.

Banana's

Me: Hey Nick, will you grab a bunch of banana's? They are right over there.
Nick: No. You are way to picky about banana's, go get your own bunch.

Does anyone else have a food item that they are ridiculously picky about? For me, it is Banana's. They have to be slightly green, small, no brown spots, no drop marks, not mushy.

The Chelsea Handler of Pregnancy

**I am pretty sure that most everyone who reads my blog is female – so I feel a little better putting this post up. In addition, I hope I can make the assumption that this little post will not offend anyone. Alright, that was my little disclosure. **

So, Nick and I are driving down the road yesterday on our way to Sparky’s pizza (yum!) and I am talking (more on the what in a moment). He stops me in the middle of me talking and says –

“You are totally the Chelsea Handler of pregnancy.”

I had to think that over for a minute. Um yep. Totally the Chelsea Handler of pregnancy.

Now Chelsea Handler is opinionated, un-censored, bla bla bla. I am not sure that I am necessarily inappropriate like her, but she is definitely not all ushy gushy, ooey gooey about stuff – and this is where I am like her.

I had to add that I found, through reading the hysterically funny “Belly Laughs,” that I am not unlike Jenny McCarthy either.

And so here is why, as a pregnant person, I am like these un-censored, super comical women.

Many women feel like they are in touch with a whole new side of themselves when they are pregnant. They feel womanly, they relish in the sensation of the baby moving, they feel very earth mama – in touch with their inner granola, they love the connection they build with their baby while it is in the womb, they daydream, they talk to their little bean, etc etc etc. You get the point. I however, do not.

So here was the conversation that caused Nick to tell me I was the Chelsea Handler of Pregnancy (again, no one better take any offense – I mean no harm, promise)

Me: So, I have friends who were definitely into the whole earth mama part of the birthing process – That’s totally not going to be me – I mean, I am kind of a granola, organic loving hippie type – but definitely not in touch with my “earth mama”

Nick: What do you mean?

Me: Well, like the book that I have called “A Child is Born” there are all these pictures of these people giving birth and they all have their gowns wide open, breasts hanging out, feeling all free and open and whatever and the first thing they want is for the new naked, fluid covered baby who will probably take a poop seconds after birth to be placed on their naked chests and feel some huge connection with their whole naked to nakedness and it’s this big wonderful earth mama moment. Uh, ew! There is no part of that whole scenario that sounds even remotely appealing to me! My gown will be closed and I can bond just fine with the baby through a layer of fabric.

Nick: Dude you are just like Chelsea Handler.  Some friend is telling her about her magical experience and Chelsea is like, EW! That’s totally you!

There are other things that make me less than earth mama.

-I have never talked to Baby Bear – I feel awkward and uncomfortable with the idea of holding a conversation with someone I have never met that has taken up residence in my abdomen and probably only hears me like Charlie Brown hears his teacher. Wa wa wa wa waaaaa….

-The baby moving, while comforting even now and kinda cool at first, generally gives me less of a “oh the baby is moving, how magical!” and “oh wow I can see it move!” than a “Holy crap! It’s moving” to which Nick will say “wow, that looks like an alien is moving around inside you” and I am like “yea, it feels just as alien as it looks!” Then you see an arc of something pop about an inch up from where my already humungo belly is and a whole lot of “eeeeeeeee’s” and “yikes’es” and uncontrollable giggles ensue – not the typical, “oooh, he’s moving! Wow, how cool!” “ooh, put your hand here and feel him kick!!” I think I have even gone so far as to describe him as that moment in the movie Alien when the alien thing pops out of the dudes stomach–oops.

-Jenny McCarthy was terrified of one aspect of birth above all others. It wasn’t the pain, it wasn’t tearing, stretching, giving birth in front of others – no – what she was most terrified of was taking a poop on the table. She was so scared of this that she asked every woman with a new baby if she had done it. Of course, most women were not that thrilled to be asked such a question – but I sure was glad to have read that someone else (and someone very famous no less) had the exact same biggest fear as me.

-I can’t for the life of me name this baby without meeting him. I feel like I need to “know him on the outside” whereas most women I know have an instant connection, the moment they conceive. Here is one of the things I had to say about that to Nick– “It was hard enough naming Trooper, I’m super glad you get dogs when they are a little older and have a personality. I never would have been able to name Trooper without knowing his personality. Too bad you can’t wait til your baby is several months old because in the beginning, they really don’t show much personality…” Wow, how nice of me. I sound so caring and nurturing.

I do have hope of being a great and nurturing mom. Some of the best moms I know told me they were a lot like me in pregnancy. I am ridiculously nurturing and attached to my dog, he is like a child to me and I light up whenever I see him. But sometimes I look around at these women who have such a connection to their bumps, rubbing them, cooing to them, singing to them, imagining an earth mama birth complete with instant nursing and nakedness – and I can’t help but have that moment of worry – uh, am I not cut out for this motherly thing? To which I know the answer is, of course I will be a good mom!

Give a hug, get a hug

Nick and I are enjoying a much needed vacation in Bend together in our Airstream. We are staying at Crown Villa, a resort RV park that we have stayed at previously. Nick is taking a class today (Thursday) and I am just hanging out in the Airstream for the day. Tomorrow, we have the whole day to explore Bend and enjoy time together. We are definitely trying to enjoy time together just the two of us (three if you count the woof) before our lives change forever and time alone comes with a lot of planning.

Recently, unexpected deaths and sicknesses have touched the lives of some otherwise very young and healthy people. It is a reminder that there are many things that just are not important. Getting frustrated over an unfinished bathroom and entryway, getting overwhelmed with yard work, being annoyed with the uncertain nature of childbirth and when the baby will come - it is all so trivial. These events are reminders that in the end, there are only a handful of important things in life. Health, Happiness, Love, Family and Friends. Everything else is really just distractions that keep us from looking at what is important.

I hope that today, everyone takes the time to just enjoy time with their loved ones, revel in their health and smile big smiles of happiness. Give a hug, get a hug - and tell those you care about that you love them.

A Dastardly Confession

I have a confession.

It is a dastardly confession.

I probably shouldn't even make this confession public.

Please refrain from kicking, punching, stoning, etc me - Remember, i'm pregnant :-)

I am, ehem, enjoying this weather.

It's cool and cloudy.
Below 75
Raining
Make that pouring

I am not swollen (heat = swollen pregnant lady)
My grass is still green
My electric bill is still low
My limited wardrobe still works because I can still wear my jeans!
I love the sound of rain
My dog hates the heat

So there you go, this unseasonably cool, fall like weather is suiting this pregnant girl quite well thankyouverymuch!

Forty days or seventy days?

The whole "end to pregnancy" thing drives me a little nuts. We are busy gathering the things we will need, the things we want, and the things you end up with that you thought you needed but actually didn't. Our house is slowly becoming more and more filled with baby things (which by the way are currently stuffed in the once clean "finished" nursery which now looks like the storage room it started out as because yesterday I was just too damn tired to even think about putting things away).

But we still have a minor problem. Ok, several minor problems. Our guest bathroom still looks like, well, like sub floor and studs. The entryway is still subfloor as well. This really wouldn't be a problem under normal circumstances, in fact, I am very ok with not having the second bathroom (when we don't have guests over) - the problem is this -

The baby could be full term in 40 days or 70 days - um, that's a big span of time! 40 days would be 37 weeks, 70 days would be 10 days over 40 weeks, and all are viable options. What the ?@#$! That kind of changes my opinion on whether it is ok or not ok that we don't have a second bathroom.

Add to that our schedules, which by the way don't leave much time to sit around and daydream about the newest addition to the family. Trips to Bend, Trips to Eugene for wedding, family reunion, babysitting my sisters kids, bridal shower (all on different weekends mind you) and that doesn't leave much time to turn a bathroom from studs and subfloor to a baby friendly haven with operational plumbing, etc.

Can you say YIKES?!?!? Let me re-itterate - anytime from 40 - 70 days. Baby bear might just have to use our bathroom in the beginning :-(

Woa, I'm ahead of the game!

I am starting to feel very ready for baby. I think that overall, we have most of the big things that we need! I feel super prepared – most people I know haven’t been this ready until much further along in their pregnancies so I definitely feel like patting myself on the back – because if you know me like I know me, we know that I am one of the biggest procrastinators out there.

I just ordered a couple of the larger things on-line. From Amazon.com,  we got the Sealy Posturepedic no spring soy and latex organic crib mattress. While it was more expensive than some of the more conventional mattresses, I liked several things about this mattress (and I will definitely update again once baby sleeps on it). I like that it is organic, that soy is renewable and non-toxic, that it is not covered in a plastic chemical filled cover, that it has 2 sides, a baby side and a toddler side, that it is super lightweight (12lbs) and that Amazon.com will ship it to my house for free!

I ordered a futon cover for the futon couch that is in the babies room so that it matches better. I ordered one from Overstock.com in a cream color. I will review when it arrives.

Gap.com was having a 30% off sale so I took the time to order some nursing tanks and nursing sleep bras. These should come in handy when I get to that point, and it will be nice to have them already and not be freaking out when I have a baby and don’t have these nursing necessities!

As far as the big things go, I think we are doing well!

Crib – check
Dresser – check
Mattress – ordered
Pack n Play – check
Stroller – check
Car seat – check
Swing – check
Bouncer seat – check
High chair – check
Rocking chair – check
Extra crib for cabin – check
Baby backpack carrier - check

As for big things we are missing, I don’t know that there are any other items…other than smaller things like bottle nipples, pacifiers, baby bjorn, food processer, smaller stroller, monitor, mobile, etc we are doing pretty well! I would just like to take a moment to bask in the preparedness! I don’t think that I have ever been this put together this early on for an event in my whole life!

Baby Bear update 30 weeks and a few days

I can't believe I have anywhere from 7 - 12 weeks left before I am a mom. The other day I was walking to the restroom (again) and for the first time I had the though, "oh my gosh, I am really going to be a PARENT!" So crazy.

Baby Bear has been moving around A LOT lately. He punches, kicks, rolls, stretches, pushes and whatever else he is doing all alone in there. He is STRONG! Sometimes he moves hard enough to kind of hurt! I think that he has gotten used to Trooper's barking (I hope!) He doesn't seem to "startle" when Trooper starts barking. With any luck, he will sleep right through his doggie barking when he is on the outside.

Names. Ugh. I wish that names were easy. No, we still don't have a name - or even a top contender for that matter. Granted, he won't be officially named until we meet him, but I would love to have top contending names going in...yikes! Somehow, girls names are so much easier - Harper, Brie and Ellie were among my favorites for girls. I won't even venture to tell you any of the names I "kinda" like for boys lest someone make a comment on whether they like or hate - I am very impressionable when it comes to name association so I definitely don't need to add in any more associations when thinking about a name. If you have suggestions, feel free to add them to the comments, I am always looking for a good suggestion. I just feel like I should hear a name and be like, thats it! Like we did with Trooper. We worked on a name for that little guy for over a week and then one day, we were in New York City at a cafe in the pouring rain sipping on a delish cup of joe and I looked out to see the dumbest looking FJ cruiser with a snorkel on the front, parked at a cafe right outside ground zero - I mean, who needs an FJ cruiser with a snorkel in NYC anyway? But the license plate said Trooper, and like a bolt of lightening, we were like, THAT'S IT! His name is Trooper!  I want the name for our son to feel like that. And when I named my former dog Pax, it took equally long to name him...but his name just felt right when I finally settled on it.

And ps, some people complain that their husbands are too opinionated about names, my complaint is opposite. Nick has almost zero opinion on names. Not good for a completely indecisive type like me. I will let you in on a little secret though, baby bear does have a middle name - so we are 2/3 of the way to a name...that's a start!

_________ Nicholas B

So what is in a middle name? Greek tradition (yall may not be aware that Nick's grandpa came over from Greece to Oregon, Nick's Dad is full Greek, making Nick 1/2 Greek) dictates that all boys get their father's first name as their middle name which I think is a sweet tradition, so there you have it, Nicholas as the middle name was a super easy choice.

Alright, I am off to get my day started. Blogging isn't particularly good time management!
